Looking to CBD as a natural way to treat a variety of ailments has become increasingly popular over the past few years. One of the most common reasons people use CBD is to help with inflammation. Inflammation is part of the body’s immune response. Short term inflammation can be beneficial in protecting the body, long term inflammation is often linked to multiple diseases. Chronic inflammation can cause pain, heat, swelling, and redness. Inflammation can be treated with many medications as well as some natural remedies. While the majority of people know that CBD helps reduce inflammation, many people don’t know how.

How Does CBD Help to Reduce Inflammation?

CBD works in the body by binding to endocannabinoid receptors, which are found in the brain (CB1 receptors) and throughout the body (CB2 receptors). CBD has been found to affect the immune system in multiple ways which, when all happening together, effectively reduce inflammation. Studies have found CBD helps by interacting with cannabinoid receptors in the immune system to upregulate T-regulatory cells as a mechanism to suppress an inflammatory response. Another important effect CBD has on the immune system is that it causes apoptosis in activated immune response cells. Apoptosis is just a fancy word for the death of cells. While this may sound alarming at first, it is important to understand that apoptosis occurs in your body naturally every day. By assisting apoptosis in activated immune response cells, CBD stops the immune system’s inflammatory response. CBD has also been found to downregulate cytokine and chemokine production, which also play a role in the inflammatory response in the body. By downregulating cytokine and chemokine production, upregulating T-regulatory cell production, and inducing apoptosis in activated immune response cells, CBD can lessen the immune system’s inflammatory response thus reducing inflammation.

While a study published in 2009 in Future Medicinal Chemistry, "Cannabinoids as novel anti-inflammatory drugs," reviews these same findings, not much additional study has been done on the subject. An important point to note is that in existing studies CBD has been found to interact with the immune system safely. This means when choosing a pure and natural CBD product it should be considered as a natural method of reducing inflammation. The main draw of using CBD for its anti-inflammatory properties is the lack of side effects. Drugs prescribed by a doctor most often have a slew of side effects, and no one wants to deal with those. CBD provides an effective method for reducing inflammation without the risk of side effects such as nausea, stomach pain, gas, diarrhea, and vomiting.
